In the Book of Revelation in the Bible, a 'fiery mountain' is tossed down to Earth. This sounds a lot like an asteroid collision, and 2000 years ago when the Bible was written, people didn't know what an asteroid was.
God has passed judgement on the Earth once before, and that was when sin was rampant and many had turned from him... much like today.
