By blending both modern and primitive methods into our curriculum, we strive to offer a comprehensive view of survival and preparedness. Our course topics include wilderness and urban survival, fur trapping, bushcraft, primitive skills, long-term wilderness living, land navigation, home disaster preparation, outdoor cooking, food procurement and storage, foraging, wild edibles, and others.
We are not a group of hobby survivalists that turned into instructors overnight. Our staff live the lifestyle they promote and teach; it's not just a hobby or fad. The knowledge they pass on to the students is based on real world experiences rather than mere theory. Our cadre of instructors has worked and lived in the Ozark Mountains, Desert Southwest, Rocky Mountain West, Alaska, Southeastern United States, the Adirondacks, and abroad. They are professional, friendly people who will go above and beyond to ensure students understand the skills/concepts demonstrated. We hope to develop a relationship with each and every student that does not end when the course is over; ideally becoming a continual resource for folks as they work towards self-reliance.
Our owner and chief instructor is Jerry Ward. He studied wildlife biology at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Jerry's previous work experiences include professional fur trapper, rock climbing guide, gunsmith, wildland firefighter for both the North Carolina Forest Service in the Southern Appalachians and the United States Forest Service in SE Utah. His outdoor pursuits have taken him all around the United States and a few places abroad. The highlights include fur trapping in Alaska, fighting wildfire in the American West, researching primitive cultures in the Desert Southwest, trekking the rainforests of Belize, and exploring the Highlands of Scotland. Jerry has studied under some of the best woodsmen in the world; Tony Nester, Mors Kochanski, and Madison Parker to name a few. He began teaching survival and preparedness skills in 2004. His students have included foreign and U.S. military personnel, law enforcement officers, professional writers, teachers, college students, politicians, church groups, homeschool students, and families. Jerry is a certified Wilderness First Responder and is a member of The Wilderness Medical Society and The Society of Primitive Technology. He lives what he teaches and thoroughly enjoys sharing his knowledge and passion with others.
